Memories of My Grandma

Just recently my grandma (Eva Hoy) passed (April 1909 -> July 2009, yes just over 100), and I've started to try and recall many of my favourite stories of her. As a child she lived 3 blocks from the elementary school I attended. So most days no bag lunches for me, I could walk to grandma's house for a hot lunch. Handmade hamburgers, fried chicken and home fries, pot roast with mash potatoes and gravy, but, most importantly, her rice pudding.

Sometimes there would be vanilla pudding, sometimes tapioca, a smattering of chocolate or butter scotch, but as much as possible, her rice pudding. I did learn how to make it and occasionally I still do, but it's not made with her love.

  • 4 Cups Milk
  • 1 Cup Rice
  • 3/4 Cup Sugar
  • 1 egg
  • Pinch of salt
  • Splash of Vanilla
So deceptively simple, but without the hand of the master, and without the love a grandma, it's just not the same.

For the last number of years she had been suffering, so her passing is a blessing, but I will miss her with all my heart.

More Later ....
